What Is Xbox?

Xbox is a video game console that was released by Microsoft in November 2001. For the first time, Microsoft ventured in the gaming console market as Bill Gates introduced Xbox in front on the Time Square branch of Toys ‘R’ Us.

At the end of 2001, there were approximately 1.5 million units sold, making Xbox one of the most successful launches in the history of video games. By the year 2002, the Xbox gaming console was an instant hit throughout Asia and Europe. The battle of video game consoles began as Nintendo has GameCube, Sony has PlayStation 2 and of course, Microsoft has Xbox.

With the success of the original Xbox, Microsoft further enhanced Xbox and developed Xbox 360. In collaboration with IBM, ATI and SiS, Microsoft released Xbox 360 in the United States on November 22, 2005. Xbox 360 was released in Europe on December 2 and in Japan on December 10, 2005. Current competitors include Nintendo Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Xbox 360 was initially offered as Core Xbox 360 with a wired controller and Premium Xbox 360 with a wireless controller. Currently, Xbox 360 is available in different configurations with a price ranging from $200 to $450 USD. Xbox 360 is not just a popular gaming console; it is a powerful computer with vast multimedia capabilities. With a powerful hardware, software and services, Xbox 360 literally puts the gaming experience as its best. A custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU makes Xbox 360 a powerful machine.

The Xbox 360 can be used as a home entertainment system wherein you can watch movies and play mp3s. It has a DVD drive which can read Xbox DVDs and the usual optical media formats allowing you to play Xbox games music CDs and DVD movies. You can purchase an Xbox DVD remote but you can also use your Xbox 360 controller for this.

Just connect your Xbox with your broadband connection and you get the instant Xbox Live Silver. This is the free version of the Xbox Live wherein you can download games, chat online and share your gamer profile with others. The only downside of the Xbox Live Silver is you cannot be able to play online. With Xbox Live Gold, you will be able to do so for a fee. For safety purposes, the Xbox allows parents to control the online and offline game experiences for their children.
